Are You Ready for God to do a New Thing in Your Life?
Do you need a new thing in your life? Are you in a rut? We all end up there from time to time. Maybe it’s a deep rut or maybe it’s just a shallow rut. If that’s where you are, there’s a sure prescription to get you out of that rut and moving forward again.
The Ruts
There are many things that can bog us down.
The rut of the past. Not every decision we make in our lives turn out to be the right decision. I’ve done more than my far share of ‘what if’ thinking. I have learned not to stay in that mode because it will absolutely ruin my day, making me completely unproductive and discouraged.
The rut of routine. I love routine but it can be a rut. Routine can help us be productive but it can also crush initiative, creativity, adventure and joy! It can blind us to open doors and what God wants to bring into our lives.
There is also the rut of circumstance. Maybe you can see no way out of what is going on. Maybe there is no way out right now. But can God still do a new thing for you?
A New Thing
Remember not the former things,
nor consider the things of old.
Behold, I am doing a new thing;
now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?
I will make a way in the wilderness
and rivers in the desert.
The wild beasts will honor me,
the jackals and the ostriches,
for I give water in the wilderness,
rivers in the desert,
to give drink to my chosen people,
the people whom I formed for myself
that they might declare my praise.
– Isaiah 43:18–21 (ESV)
5 Powerful Lessons
If you need a new thing in your life, grab a hold of these lessons.
One – Forget the former things – don’t dwell on the past.
Why not? When we dwell on the past and think about former things it sustains the guilt of bad decisions and sin. We know that ‘what if’ is futile and discouraging. It also blinds us to the future and paralyzes our faith. While it is important to learn lessons from our experiences, dwelling on past lessons means we haven’t really learned those lessons.
Two – God is doing a new thing!
In the immediate context, God was about to rescue his people from captivity and exile. But the way God works is that he is always bringing new things to life. He brings hope out of hopelessness and life out of death.
Three – We must look around and see what God is doing.
Do you not perceive it? God’s creative nature is still alive. He makes us new every morning, if we allow him to. When we look through the eyes of faith, we begin to see it. When we read his word, when we pray – especially as we listen – as we wait, we are watching. We can see his handiwork around us!
Four – We are God’s people.
As we follow Jesus, he adopts us as his children and makes us his chosen people. This opens our lives to incredible privileges and responsibilities. He protects us and provides for us. We are made for him!
Five – We are to proclaim his praise.
It is our privilege to continually praise him and discover the joy we receive in that work! God is a giving God. As we give him praise, he gives us love and peace and contentment! And there is something powerfully transformational about praise!
