7 Awesome Things God Does for You

Have you taken time lately to reflect on how awesome God is? I sometimes rush through my day without really thinking about God as much as I should. How about you? The Psalms help me slow down and contemplate the God we serve – the God who sent his son, Jesus into the world. It is good to slow down and remember who God is.

In Psalm 62, we find seven things that God does for us that reflect his awesome character. These things reveal who God is and remind us that we truly owe God a response!

For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence,
for my hope is from him.
He only is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress; I shall not be shaken. (Psalm 62:5–6 – ESV)

Awesome #1 – He is our source of hope

Every hope in this life and in the next comes from him. When we are following Jesus we find truest hope in God. This hope is conformed to God’s original intention for us. That intention is for us to participate with him in his creation. We are to have fellowship and partnership in his kingdom.

We must stop putting our hope in other things. As followers of Jesus we should not be putting our hope in: money, politics, family, friends, career, comfort or anything else contrary to God’s plan.

Awesome #2 – He is our rock

Jesus said we are to build our lives on the rock of his teaching – his words. He was very emphatic when he told his disciples that failure to do so was like building on the sand (Matthew 7:24-27). We must build on the truth as set out by Jesus and recorded in God’s Word. That rock and truth leads to a sound life. When we build on the sand, untruth, we build a worldly life which will ultimately be destroyed.

We build our lives on this rock, meaning we spend time daily in the word. Reading your Bible is a large part of the listening component of prayer. It is God speaking. You must build your life on God’s word, his truth, not on someone’s teaching.

Awesome #3 – He is our salvation.

To be saved means to be brought out of danger to a place of safety.

He saves us from sin to righteousness. To live in sin is to live in death. It is a life that is destined for ultimate and eternal separation from God. He gives us his righteousness when we confess our sins and repent.

He saves us from ignorance to revelation and knowledge. Our eyes are blind to the truth until he opens them. Spiritual truth comes alive as we are saved.

He saves us from foolishness to wisdom. Our decisions and judgments are limited and flawed because we cannot understand the truth. His salvation opens our hearts and minds to apply his words wisely thus transforming our entire lives.

He saves us from ourselves to himself. When we are honest with ourselves, we acknowledge that we have made way too many avoidable and disastrous mistakes. His perfect leadership is exactly what we need. That is why we say a continual yes to him.

Awesome #4 – He is our fortress

That means he protect us. He builds a wall and watchtower for us. Fortresses are for protection and that means we are under siege by the world and under attack by all God’s enemies. He also provides for our needs in the fortress.

In order to benefit, we must stay in the fortress. We can’t be wandering over the countryside and count on the protection of the fortress. To stay in the fortress means we have continual fellowship with him in prayer, Bible reading and worship, as well as regular fellowship with other believers.

Once God has spoken;
twice have I heard this:
that power belongs to God,
and that to you, O Lord, belongs steadfast love.
For you will render to a man
according to his work. (Psalm 62:11–12 – ESV)

Awesome #5 – He is our power

His power demonstrates his glory. It is also used to empower us for obedience and service and for or advancing the kingdom of God. We remain in his power as we remain in a state of obedience.

Awesome #6 – He is the source of steadfast love.

Steadfast means that his love will never fail. This is the very character of God. This love is self-giving and unconditional. He pours love into our lives and it has a way of multiplying as we give it away.

God’s love is powerful but for us to experience it we must live in a state of obedience and fellowship with him. We must continually trust him in order to fully experience his love (and all of these seven awesome things).

Awesome #7 – He is the perfect Judge

Far too often we see people get away with things. We see evil thrive and goodness destroyed. However, in God’s time, he rewards the righteous and punishes the wicked. He will make everything right and perfect.

So we must strive to live in accordance with his will. This is our privilege and responsibility. As we decide to daily follow and do his will he empowers us.

Three More Responses the Psalmist Emphasizes

Wait in silence. This means we must slow down, quiet down, turn off distractions and listen for God.

Pour out your heart. God wants to hear your very heart. You can trust him with your emotions, fears, dreams, frustrations, desires, dependence and love.

Trust him. We must trust his promises and his word. Trust is absolute and unconditional – like Job: ‘though he slay me, yet will I trust him.’ We trust in bad times and good times.
