April 9, 2019 Bible Reading 0

Do you want to be overloaded with biblical lessons to help you in your spiritual walk? If so, read the book of Psalms! Of course, this is a good thing. There is inspiration, comfort, instruction, prayer, devotion and so much more in this great book.

Since there are too many lessons to list, I have selected a few of my favorite lessons to share with you.

The way to blessing

Blessed is the man

who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,

       nor stands in the way of sinners,

nor sits in the seat of scoffers;

  but his delight is in the law of the Lord,

and on his law he meditates day and night.

Psalm 1:1-2 (ESV)

Three simple paths to blessing are outlined in the verse few words of this great book:

Delight in the law of the Lord. This is to enjoy the word of God. When we love something, we want to spend much time doing it. We are to love and delight in the word of God. Our time reading our Bible shouldn’t be a drudgery or an unpleasant discipline!

Meditate on God’s Word. Spending time pondering the word of God helps us grow spiritually. Do you spend time thinking about what it means? Do you repeat often the words of God that you have committed to memory? This is the way of blessing!

Avoid the wicked. Those who are self-centered, prideful, mocking, abusive – well you get the picture – are not to have place in our lives. Can we avoid them altogether? We cannot but we don’t have to spend much time with them or have them as our closest friends!

The Analogy of a Tree

  He is like a tree

planted by streams of water

       that yields its fruit in its season,

and its leaf does not wither.

       In all that he does, he prospers.

Psalm 1:3 (ESV)

The person that is blessed by God is like a tree. This verse says so much about the Psalms. Throughout the book we have beautiful word pictures. This is one of them. When we are walking with the Lord, we are fruitful no matter what is happening around us. We live and thrive in the worst of circumstances!

The Unbreakable power of the anointed

Psalm 2 talks about the power God gives to his anointed.

It is useless to resist him:

Why do the nations rage

and the peoples plot in vain?

Psalm 2:1 (ESV)

We cannot derail God’s plan through his servant, Jesus. Why even try?

Instead we must make a good choice:

Serve the Lord with fear,

and rejoice with trembling.

Psalm 2:11 (ESV)

27 Benefits of the Word of God

I once sat and identified 27 distinct benefits of God’s Word listed in Psalm 119! I won’t list all of them here but here are 7!

Loving God’s Word means no shame (verse 6):

Then I shall not be put to shame,

having my eyes fixed on all your commandments.

God’s Word keeps us from sin (verse 11):

       I have stored up your word in my heart,

that I might not sin against you.

God’s Word gives us life (verses 40 and 50)

  Behold, I long for your precepts;

in your righteousness give me life!

This is my comfort in my affliction,

that your promise gives me life.

We receive powerful assurance from his word (verse 86):

  All your commandments are sure;

they persecute me with falsehood; help me!

His word brings light into our lives (verse 105):

Your word is a lamp to my feet

and a light to my path.

His word is pure delight to our lives (verse 143):

Trouble and anguish have found me out,

but your commandments are my delight.

Our hope is found in God’s Word (verse 147):

I rise before dawn and cry for help;

I hope in your words.
