A Love Song

The Song of Songs, which is Solomon’s.

       Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth!

       For your love is better than wine;

           your anointing oils are fragrant;

       your name is oil poured out;

therefore virgins love you.

       Draw me after you; let us run.

The king has brought me into his chambers.

       We will exult and rejoice in you;

we will extol your love more than wine;

rightly do they love you.

Song of Solomon 1:1-4 (ESV)

So begins the Song of Songs – a poem about love and its great value.

In the context of scripture this becomes a challenging book. I confess that it is tough to read this for my daily time with God but I do not neglect it.

Here are three lessons we can learn from this short book.

This is a Marital Love Song

We see desire grow in this pursuit of betrothed man and woman. There is nothing that will keep them apart as their love fuels their passion. God has designed us to love in this intimate and physical way. When it is pure, we see no one but the one we love and want to spend time together always. There is a certain degree of comfort in the reality that this kind of love is created by God for our enjoyment!

An Allegory?

There was a period of time when much of the Old Testament was understood as an allegory. Brother Lawrence began to write a commentary of this book as an allegory between Christ and the Church. He had written about 500 pages and was half way through the book when he died! He saw something spiritual in every little detail. And indeed Jesus loves his church with a great passion and we can never discount how much he desires his church as his bride.

Longing for one another

Marriage should never become mundane. While the nature of the marriage relationship may change over the years, we should always long for one another. Even after decades of marriage, I want to be with my wife and when we are apart even for a few hours, I look forward to reuniting with her.
