Fatal Choices – Do They Exist?
If you make a really bad decision, can you recover from it? Is there a choice you could make that has consequences that will completely ruin your life? Will fear make you fail?
Too many choices we make are made out of fear. I’m not talking about the fear of crossing a busy street but the fear of saying yes to God when he leads you into what you think is a risky venture.
This is exactly the kind of fear that change the lives of thousands of people as panic overtook faith. Two verses in Deuteronomy 1 give us an incredible contrast between faith and fear.
It is eleven days’ journey from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir to Kadesh-barnea. In the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses spoke to the people of Israel according to all that the Lord had given him in commandment to them.
Deuteronomy 1:2–3 (ESV)
What happened?
When the twelve spies explored the land of Canaan, ten of them were pessimistic and brought back a bad report. While Caleb and Joshua pleaded with the people to exercise their faith in God and go into the land, the people embraced fear instead and turned their backs on God’s plan.
That lack of faith turned an eleven day journey into 40 years of wandering in the wilderness!
Could it happen to you?
Most of the choices we make don’t have such far reaching implications. However, I do remember one person very specifically that rushed into a decision that took her away from God. That single decision led to a domino of other bad choices that led to almost irredeemable ruin – and I’m not being overdramatic!
We want to be safe in our daily lives but we most overcome the temptation of embracing our idea of safety and instead commit to God’s safe path for our lives. That path can prove to be uncomfortable at times. That path will also be a path that is fully dependent on the presence and power of God.
Choices – What will you do?
It is so important that you say yes to the next thing God asks you to do. God says go, you go. God says stop, you stop. While it may be easy in theory, it is challenging in life. The question is, do you want to take 11 days to get to where God wants you or 40 years?
You may face giants. You will face challenges but the reward is always worth the effort and faith to get there.
Stay true to the word of God. Spend much time talking to him and trust him. He is always faithful and will see you through.
Get serious
If you sense God calling you to something right now, don’t waste another minute – say yes. If you are waiting to hear from him or if you are where he wants you, continue to ask him what comes next and express your complete faith by doing the next thing he asks you to do.
