Power Packed Life Lessons from Mark
Mark is a short book that chronicles the life of Jesus. Because so much of Mark’s content is also found in Matthew and Luke, it has been a more challenging book for me over the years. But Mark gives details that you don’t find in other books.
The Power of Faith
Powerful faith is at work in this passage from Mark 2. Four men carried a paralytic to Jesus but they couldn’t get to him because the place was packed! So they dug through the roof and lowered the man in front of Jesus. Here is Jesus’ first reaction:
And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”
Mark 2:5 (ESV)
Of course, Jesus went on to heal the man physically as well. But note that Jesus saw their faith. The four men had faith and their faith was rewarded.
We have the power to change people’s lives with our faith. And when we add our faith to the faith of others, miracles happen. When we believe that Jesus can do incredible things, he does them!
The Importance of Being Whole
Jesus continued his work of healing. Throughout his ministry, Jesus was filled with compassion for those suffering around him. He healed many because his desire is for them to be whole.
We know that when we get to heaven we will have perfect bodies. There is no sickness or dying in heaven. That is God’s plan for us. He longs for us to be completely well. Of course, the curse of sin has made sickness and death a reality in this world. However, many times, if we exercise our faith, we can be healed.
Ultimately, we will be whole. In this world, we might be healthy and whole and we often forfeit these blessings because we lack faith.
Weak Faith is Better Than No Faith
I love the story of the man with the demon possessed son. He asks Jesus to help them if he can. This is a powerful conversation:
“And it has often cast him into fire and into water, to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” And Jesus said to him, “ ‘If you can’! All things are possible for one who believes.” Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!”
Mark 9:22–24 (ESV)
And Jesus healed the boy.
I find myself at this point from time to time, don’t you? When we believe, even a little and ask for more faith, we will be rewarded. Jesus recognizes our human weaknesses and shortcomings and his grace is completely sufficient.
