Is your life out of whack? Are you able to maintain a healthy balance for all the demands that are placed upon you? What are you doing about it?

There is a way to balance life in order to get the most out of every day. I have found important ways to balance my life. They work for me. I would certainly love to hear what you might have done because I don’t have all the answers!

What are the things we need to balance?

Spiritual Health

We need time to worship. It is essential to our spiritual health. We must also spend time in the word and in prayer. In this hectic age, it is nice to have some time of solitude as well.

Personal Health

There are many aspects of personal health that cry for our attention. Our bodies need adequate exercise, a healthy diet and restorative sleep. Our minds need nourishment as well. Time for thinking, reading, learning and rest is important. And we need to experience emotional health with peace, joy, encouragement and love.

Social Responsibilities

We live in a connected world. If married, we want our marriages to thrive. We have families that need us. We have friends and so many social groups that carry expectations: professional, kid’s sports, church, neighborhood, civic organizations and so much more.

Role Responsibilities

What role do you play? Bread-winner, student, stay at home parent, or whatever else you may do demand time and attention.

All Together

If there were only one or two demands in each of the areas I mentioned, balance would not be that hard. But that is not the case. Too often, these demands are not neatly delineated but become a mass of frantic activity and confusion! How can we possibly make sense and bring order and balance to it?

Six Steps to Achieving Balance

One – Start with the spiritual. Of all the things in life, only the Spirit is eternal. Therefore, we must ensure that we are taking adequate actions to ensure our spiritual health. Every day it is essential that we receive spiritual nourishment.

Two – Make room for essentials. Only you can define your essentials but here is my take. Essentials are good relationships within the family, honest hard work to provide for the family, good education and personal health in all its aspects. This takes a lot of time and energy. Which leads to the next, and maybe, hardest thing.

Three – Eliminate some non-essentials. We tend to be over-scheduled. So many of our activities are really not that important. There are too many people who are letting their spiritual and physical health go in order to keep up with activities that they or someone else is expecting them to participate in!

Four – Establish a rhythm to live by. Routines can be very helpful in ensuring the most important things are cared for. Work and school are two obvious examples of rhythm. But you should build around spiritual, personal and social essentials as well.

Five – Leave room for the urgent. Sometimes emergencies happen, the unexpected comes along – something that can’t be ignored. Ensure that you have room for those things. Then, if they don’t happen, you have bonus time!

Six – Ask for help! Maybe this should be number one but here are some suggestion for help: Prayer, a life coach/advisor/counselor, friend. Maybe you can figure it out yourself but I suggest that you at least pray about it.

Warning

Getting your life in balance means you will be leaving some things and maybe some people out. There will be misunderstandings and possible hurt feelings. Move gently and surely through this process. Answer questions lovingly but don’t give up. In the end, you will enjoy a richer deeper life.

Your Turn

What do you need to do next? If you have found balance another way, please share it in the comments or on our Facebook page. I would love to hear from you.
